Taking place monthly\, this will be a space for people of all genders to discuss feminist books. In June we will be discussing King Kong Theory by Virginie Despentes. \nWe will not be asking everyone to read the whole book\, though of course you can if you choose. We’ll focus our talk on these four essays: \n\nBad Lieutenants\nWho’s Taking it up the Arse\, You or Me?\nSleeping with the Enemy\nPorn Witches\n\nTW: This book contains an essay detailing the author’s experience of sexual assault. Because this ideal of the seductive white woman constantly being waved under our noses – well\, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t exist.’ \nPowerful\, provocative and personal\, King Kong Theory is a candid account of how the author of Baise-moi came to be Virginie Despentes. Drawing from personal experience\, Despentes shatters received ideas about rape and prostitution\, and explodes common attitudes towards sex and gender. King Kong Theory is a manifesto for a new punk feminism\, reissued here in a brilliant new translation by Frank Wynne. \n \nAbout Kate \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

The book club runs the first Sunday of every month\, 11am-12pm. \nFor October\, we will be reading The Boy Who Cried Ghost by Ian Eagleton and meeting on Sunday 6th September! Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

Shocked by this loss which\, despite her mother’s condition\, she had refused to fathom\, Ernaux embarks on a daunting journey back through time in an effort to recover the different facets of a woman whose openness to the world and appetite for reading created the conditions for the author’s own social ascent. \nMirroring A Man’s Place\, in which she narrates her father’s slow rise to material comfort\, A Woman’s Story explores the ambiguous and unshakeable bond between mother and daughter\, its fluctuation over the course of their lives\, the alienating worlds that separate them and the inescapable truth that we must lose the ones we love. In this quietly powerful tribute to the last thread connecting her to the world out of which she was born\, Ernaux attempts to do her mother the greatest justice she can: to portray her as the individual she was. \n\nBorn in 1940\, Annie Ernaux grew up in Normandy\, studied at Rouen University\, and later taught at secondary school. From 1977 to 2000\, she was a professor at the Centre National d’Enseignement par Correspondance. In 2017\, Annie Ernaux was awarded the Marguerite Yourcenar Prize for her life’s work. In 2022\, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. \nTanya Leslie was the first translator of Annie Ernaux into English and translated a number of her works\, including A Woman’s Story (1991)\, A Man’s Place (1992)\, Simple Passion (1993)\, Shame (1998)\, I Remain in Darkness (1999) and Happening (2001)\, all for Seven Stories Press in the US. \n\nAbout Kate \nKate Feld is a writer who grew up in in the U.S. state of Vermont and now lives outside Manchester\, UK. She writes poetry\, short fiction\, essays and prose that sits between forms. Her writing explores the natural world\, mythology and the unconscious\, often taking the form of lyric narratives that both interrogate and celebrate lived experience. Her work has been published widely in journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly\, The Letters Page\, Hotel and Tolka. She is the founding editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series The Real Story\, and lectures in Journalism at the University of Salford. Her chapbook of poetry and photography\, Deeryard\, is forthcoming from Death of Workers Whilst Building Skyscrapers.

Her debut novel\, Amphibian\, was released in 2024. Her first book\, No Way Home: A Memoir of Life on the Run\, came out in 2018 from St. Martin’s Press\, following her childhood spent on the run with her fugitive father. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times\, British Vogue\, The Guardian\, National Geographic\, LitHub\, Vice\, and Condé Nast Traveler\, amongst others. Tyler has made appearances on podcasts and radio including BBC Outlook\, Good Life Project\, and Radiotopia’s Criminal. She is also the creator of Reading the City\, a weekly newsletter of bookish events taking place around New York City. Her writing is represented by Emma Parry at Janklow & Nesbit Associates. She is currently the senior editor at James Beard award-winning drinks magazine SevenFifty Daily and lives in Brooklyn with her husband.

She studied Korean language and literature at Kyung Hee University\, and worked as an editor. She made her literary debut with the novel Wizard Bakery (2009)\, which won the Changbi Prize. It became bestseller in Korea and was translated into many different languages. Her short story collection Hoping That It Wasn’t Only Me (2015) received Writer of the Year Award and Hwang Sun-won Literary Award for New Writers.
